Themed Book Displays in the LC

Book displays have always been a put of the school library, media center, and now Learning Commons (as we refer to it in this new era). This school year, I really wanted to give our students and teachers easy access to a variety of book themes/topics.

Book Displays Breakdown

Monthly Theme

Every month at the front entrance of the Learning Commons, you can expect to see books on topics in that month. These topics are related to seasonal changes, sports seasons, national month topics, and holidays. Here are some examples for you to get a better idea--September is the beginning of the season of Fall/Autumn, kickoff of football season, and Labor Day. In February we celebrate Groundhog's Day, Valentine's Day, and Presidents' Day. It is also Black History month and Dental Health month.

SSYRA Books

Sunshine State Young Reader Awards is what that acronym states for in case you didn't know by now. The Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME) is responsible for this reading program in our state for children in PK-8th grades. Every school year, the SSYRA committee within FAME reads hundreds of books and votes on their tops 12-15 choices to be nominees for the upcoming school year. What is a nominee? A nominee is usually a person, but in this case it is a book that is formally entered into an election. For more information about the SSYRA program, click here.

There are three categories of SSYRA to breakdown by grade levels for reading purposes. Here are the groupings, and click on each to view the 2018-2019 school year book nominees: SSYRA Jr. | SSYRA Gr. 3-5 | SSYRA Grade 6-8

New Arrivals

Self-explanatory really, but this is were you will find all brand new titles in our collection. I'd like to point out here that eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines that are new to our collections will not be displayed here. Be sure to view the New Arrivals resource list in Destiny basic catalog search or Destiny Quest where those materials will appear. :)

Survivor Books

I hope all of our returning students will know what a Survivor Book is because I've had this around for many years. A Survivor Book in our LC collection is a book that is not circulating at all (for a year or more), and I want to put out for all to see for a couple weeks before I weed it from our shelves for good. You might be surprised that a book can sit on a shelf with no attention for years. It's my job to help those books out and get them out of their shelf home and put on display where they can show off their cover and get some fresh air. ;)

There is a full page sign for the Survivor Books display that explains how to help those books. In a nutshell, if you decide to check out and read a Survivor Book, you are simply asked to tell Ms. Emily if you liked the story enough for it to stay in our collection. If it wasn't good, then maybe will put it back out on display for someone else to give a read before sending it away. No matter what the fate of a book is in this display, I appreciate your input as our collection is for all of you to enjoy and grow in knowledge. Books should rotate every two weeks in this display.
