What Kids Are Reading

Renaissance (the company who created AR360) published this month their 10th Anniversary Edition of What Kids Are Reading. As a media specialist, a mother of young children, and a reader myself, you bet I wanted to know what the faves are among students by grade all across America!

Check out the results from kids across America which includes YOUR reading data!

So would you agree with the Top 5 Must-Read list in your grade level?

Since I'm not in a grade anymore, I'm going to share with you our school's Learning Commons' circulation data to see how we compare to the national report by Renaissance.

Grades K-2 Dr. Seuss collection is highly circulated every year. Pete the Cat series has been popular since adding it to our collection several years ago. Junie B. Jones series is still popular but not as much as in previous school years.

Grades 3-5 Wonder and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series definitely make our Top Titles. Not much circulation of our Learning Commons' copies of The Outsiders, but it is read as a class novel in middle school, so it would make our list.

Grades 6-8 Wonder and The Harry Potter series definitely make our Top Titles. Not much circulation of our Learning Commons' copies of The Outsiders, but it is read as a class novel in middle school, so it would make our list.

Keep in mind that circulation statistics change from school year to school year mostly due to new series titles being added or a new best-seller title being added. However, they don't change too much because a series that has been popular for a while continues it's popularity if the author writes a new book for their series. Hence, Diary of a Wimpy Kid series making the Educators' Top 5 Must-Read Books in past school years.

Some titles and series that did not make Renaissance's lists that would definitely make our school's Top 5 Must-Read list:

+ James Patterson's Middle School series or any book by James Patterson in our collection for that matter

+ Babymouse series (graphic novel)

+ Bad Kitty series

+ The Baby-sitters club (graphic novel) series

+ Captain Underpants series

+ Dork Diaries series

+ Drama, Smile, or Sisters by Raina Telgemeier

+ Big Nate series

+ The Terrible Two by Mac Barnett and Jory John

+ The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket
