Summer Reading 2019!

Kids, you have no excuse not to read this summer with all these options I'm about to provide you. You live in a tech-centered, digital age where information (including digital books--A.K.A. eBooks and eAudiobooks) are available to you for 24/7 online and offline access. So when you hear your teacher, your parent, or me say "No excuses!," we mean NO EXCUSES for you not to read anytime or anywhere. :)

#1 Access Destiny Discover app if you are a returning GCS student for 2019-2020 going into 2nd grader or higher by logging in to your Destiny account. eBooks and eAudiobooks are waiting for YOU! Contact Mrs. Rice from the Learning Commons homepage if you need your Destiny credentials. Directions for accessing Destiny Discover can be found here.

#2 SSYRA 2019-2020 lists are available, so get a jump start on reading next school year's nominees so you will be ready to vote in the spring. SSYRA Jr. (Grades PK-2) list here. SSYRA Grades 3-5 list here. SSYRA Grades 6-8 list here.

#3 A Universe of Stories! is this summer's reading program with the Florida public libraries. They offer weekly prizes and more, so be sure to check out their program here.

#4 ReadQuest by Renaissance, the founder of Accelerated Reader 360, has a year round reading program. Access their toolkit here for printout and ideas to keep your child reading all summer long.

#5 Story Time from Space Have an astronaut read a picture book to your child from the International Space Station as a fun mystery reader one day. Click here.

All links for summer reading are also available on Destiny's homepage for your convenience.

There are lots of other options and ideas to be found to encourage your child to read throughout the summer. You could try finding some on Pinterest or internet searches. These are simply five suggestions to get you started and really all you might need. The one I would love for your child to use if going into 2nd grade or higher is reading or listening to our collection of digital titles via Destiny Discover app. As little as 20 minutes a day will help your child build vocabulary, reading fluency, comprehension, and avoid having them regress any while on break for just over two months. Books are not the only reading material either. You can read absolutely anything--a cereal box, a magazine article, a movie review, anything with words is considered reading. What are good reading materials is a different topic for a different day, however.

If you need any help, please don't hestitate to contact me.

Have a safe and awesome summer!
