AR Speedway (AR360 2018-2019)

Hello all! It's been a while since I have posted and truthfully it is because I know that I do not have readers. This is not the topic of this post, but I'm going to ask that if you are reading this post today that you share that you have done so with a GCS friend. Best form of advertising is usually by word of mouth--So can I count on you to help let other students know that Mrs. Rice has a blog to help all GCS students learn???

Now for the real topic of this post--AR Speedway! Did you notice the AR Speedway bulletin board in the Learning Commons yet? This school year, we are racing to read the most books we can as a school. I met with teachers before school officially opened for the 2018-2019 school year, and let them know I wanted all classes to decide on a books read goal for the school year. Truthfully, not every class got back to me, but we have an overall goal of 8000 books read!! What do you think? Can we do it?

The reading game has changed this school year. This is IMPORTANT to note if you want to work towards the incentives each quarter.

INCENTIVES

*Individual incentive: AR Jeans Day is awarded to any student who earns an 80% or higher on his/her Average % Correct AR360 goal in a given term (quarter).

*Class incentive: 3 Top Classes groups (1st & 2nd; 3rd, 4th, & 5th; 6th, 7th & 8th) compete each term for the Top Class status and prize. Prizes are a surprise, but in the past they have been cute toys and novelty school supplies.

*School incentive: I'm working on the details of this one, so I'm going to leave it a mystery for now. We do have plenty of time to achieve that 8000 books read goal anyway. ;)

All you need to do is read books and take the corresponding AR quiz for every book your read. It's really that easy! Best practices are reading at least 20 minutes every day. If you have spare time in between assignments at school, pull out your book! If you have time in the car or bus ride home, pull out your book! Pick or make a cozy spot at home where you know you can quietly read. If you need book recommendations, I'm always available to help you find a book that is right for you. You can also ask your teacher or other Learning Commons staff.

You are in charge of your independent reading, which is what AR360 is all about--Independent reading! Use the time of choice to make a good choice and read to build your vocabulary, your comprehension, and travel to new and exciting places through words and pictures! Happy reading, all!!!
