Find Your Book Level at the Library

Students, I am proud to announce that I spent today (a Saturday) working in the library labeling the Young Adult (YA) fiction section with the new color coded A.R. labels. Okay, the A.R. labels have been on some of our library books for several years, but I've not been able to complete an entire section until...TODAY!

If you are in grades 5-8, you are considered eligible to read the content in the books in our YA fiction section. Almost every single book in this section conatins an A.R. label, which means that book has an A.R. quiz you should take after you finidh reading the entire book. There are two excepts to books not containing the new color coded A.R. labels in the YA section: 1.) The book does not have an A.R. quiz. This is less than a handful of books, however. 2.) I had to leave the old solid blue A.R. labels on all books with an 8.0 or higher book level. Those of you who are old enough and bright enough to read books at an 8.0 book level or higher are also fully capable of opening the front cover to read the book level on the upper right-hand corner of the first page. At this time, it is not cost effective to buy a box of 1,000 book labels for 8 and 9 book levels.

Back to the exciting news though whichis the YA section being 100% completely labeled for you to quickly browse those shelves for a book in your reading range. Let me show you what you can expect to see.

Here is a chart of A.R. book labels by color:

Please note the book level range for each color. Example: light blue is 1.0-1.9. It will not take long for you to remember your one or two colors which typically make up your reading range. Your reading range is determined five times per school year. You are tested using the STAR Reader quiz in the computer lab at the start of the school year and then again the last week of every quarter (4 times total). It is very important that when you are taking a STAR Reader quiz that you make every answer your best effort. Your reading range is the same for nine weeks which makes a quarter or marking period. Your teachers will require that you only select books from the library in your reading range to ensure that you are reading at a book level that you have been tested to read on your own.

I'd also like to remind you that the numbers on the A.R. book labels in the library correspond with grade level. Here is a list of the book levels:

0.1-0.9 Kindergarten or PK

1.0-1.9 First Grade

2.0-2.9 Second Grade

3.0-3.9 Third Grade

4.0-4.9 Fourth Grade

5.0-5.9 Fifth Grade

6.0-6.9 Sixth Grade

7.0-7.9 Seventh Grade

8.0-8.9 Eighth Grade (Old blue A.R. label in our library)

9.0-9.9 Ninth Grade (Old blue A.R. label in our library)

Don't forget that you can also search Destiny's catalog by A.R. book level to find books in our library's collection in your reading range. This is very simple to do. See my post on Search by A.R. Reading Range coming soon.
