Florida Book Awards Voting
The state of Florida has two reading organizations for children and young adults--Florida Reading Association (FRA) and Sunshine State Young Reader Award program (SSYRA). Students are encouraged to particiapte in the book award program for their grade level by reading or listening to (in the case of children who have not learned to read yet) the nominated books and vote for their favorite book in the group.
FRA is for children in Pre-K through Grade 2. Here is the link to the list of nominated books for the 2014-2015 school year. Our library collection offers print versions for most titles and ebook versions on FollettShelf for a three of the nominees.
FRA Voting Process
Teachers having their students participate in the FRA Children's Book Awards should chose a class voting day. FRA asks that at least five out of the eight books are read by each studnet in order to participate in voting. Here is a picture voting ballot to use on voting day.
Votes are to be tallied by the classroom teacher and submitted online no later than April 15, 2015 for the ballots to be counted in this school year's book awards. If the teacher prefers Mrs. Rice to submitt the votes, please email (april.rice@holyrosarycatholicschooljax.org) the results to her no later than April 14th.
SSYRA is for students in grades 3 through 8. There are two award nominations lists for this program. One list is for Elementary School (Grades 3-5) and the other list is for Middle School (Grades 6-8). Here is the link to the two lists of nominated books for the 2014-2015 school year. Our library collection offers most titles in print, but like the FRA nominees, there are a couple ebooks on FollettShelf.
SSYRA Voting Process
Teachers should chose a class voting day prior to April 15th and provide a ballot for student voters. Contact Mrs. Rice if you wish to have a sample ballot. Teachers need to email Mrs. Rice (april.rice@holyrosarycatholicschooljax.org) the results of their class' vote no later than April 14th.
I highly encourage ALL students to read the nominated books for either FRA or SSYRA to be a eligible to vote in the Florida book awards program. After all, these programs were designed for you. What do you consider a good book, and why? Voting is a formal way to express YOUR choice. Express your choice for books!
